Smart Shopping in China: Apps, Tips & Tools

Shopping in China is mobile-first — and it’s fast, cheap, and addictive. From giant e-commerce platforms to niche delivery apps, this guide helps you navigate the shopping scene like a local — without getting lost in translation.

Section 1:Major Shopping Platforms

Shopping in China is mobile-first, fast-paced, and incredibly diverse. From everyday essentials to luxury brands, these platforms dominate the online shopping scene. But each has its own strengths — knowing which one to use can save you time, money, and confusion.

TaoBao

China’s largest online marketplace — cheap, endless variety, and full of hidden gems. Great for DIY lovers, accessories, gadgets, and anything you can think of. English interface not available.

Tmall

Taobao’s premium cousin. Tmall features verified brand stores and higher-quality goods with better service. Ideal for shopping global or local brands you trust.

JD.com

Known for lightning-fast delivery and high product authenticity. JD is best for electronics, appliances, and essentials. A safer pick for first-time shoppers.

Pinduoduo(Temu)

Ultra-cheap and extremely popular — but quality can vary. Best for bargain hunters and group-buy deals. Beware: not very foreigner-friendly and no English UI. The earliest version of Temu.

XiaoHongShu(Redbook)

Half social media, half shopping app. Users post real reviews, lifestyle content, and then buy what they see. Especially popular for beauty, fashion, and travel.

Douyin Shopping

The Chinese TikTok isn’t just for videos — it’s a shopping powerhouse. Creators and brands sell products directly via livestreams and short videos. You can buy what you see with one tap.

Section 2: Delivery & Local Shopping Apps

It’s not just about online shopping — China’s local delivery scene is lightning-fast and hyper-convenient.
From food and groceries to medicine and flowers, there’s an app for everything. These services work best in cities, and some even deliver in under 30 minutes.

Meituan (美团)

China’s #1 food delivery and local services app. Order meals, coffee, groceries, hotel rooms, movie tickets, and more — all in one place. The app is in Chinese, but it is widely used, even by expats.

Ele.me (饿了么)

Alibaba’s answer to Meituan. Also focused on food and convenience delivery, with good coverage in most cities. Interfaces and promotions are slightly different — useful to compare both apps.

Hema (盒马鲜生 / Freshippo)

Alibaba’s smart grocery store with fast delivery. Great for fresh food, snacks, and imported items. Offers 30-minute delivery in major cities. App includes some English support.

Dianping (大众点评)

The Yelp + Groupon of China. Discover local restaurants, book services, read reviews, and get exclusive discounts. Essential for finding where locals actually eat and hang out.

Flash Delivery Add-ons

Apps like JD, Taobao, and even Douyin offer same-day or next-day delivery options. Just look for 极速达 (express delivery) or 次日达 (next-day delivery) when checking out.

Pro Tip:

Use WeChat mini-programs to order food or groceries if you don’t want to install every app. They’re fast, lightweight, and often available in English.

Section 3:How to Pay (As a Foreigner)

You can’t shop without a way to pay — and in China, that usually means mobile.
Cash is disappearing. Most people pay with WeChat Pay or Alipay, but for foreign visitors, getting set up takes a few extra steps. This section shows you how to make it work.
